Lesson Plan

ELIXIR-GOBLET Train-the-Trainer - Lesson Plan

A day-by-day lesson plan for running the full 4-half-day TtT course, following the same lesson-plan format taught in Session 2: Time, Activity, Description, Materials, Learning Outcomes, and Teaching Goal.

A note on granularity

This lesson plan is deliberately coarse - one row per major block (Welcome, Warm-up, Session, etc.), not a minute-by-minute breakdown of every Challenge within each session. The timing currently attached to individual Challenges inside each session file is being revisited separately and isn’t yet reliable enough to build a fine-grained version from.

A note on dates

Each day below is labeled [DD Month YYYY] as a placeholder - replace it with the actual dates of the specific course run before using this lesson plan.

A note on the session segments (Days 1-3)

Each of Days 1-3 runs as one continuous 13:30-17:00 flow, with a coffee break roughly every 45 minutes: Welcome/Warm-up flows directly into the start of that day’s session (together forming the first ~45-min block), followed by three more ~45-min blocks, each separated by a 10-minute coffee break. The “part X of 4” segments are an even time-split for scheduling purposes only - they don’t correspond to specific Parts within each session file. It’s up to the instructor to judge, on the day, where a natural pause point falls (e.g. between Parts, or after a Challenge wraps up) closest to each scheduled break time.

A note on Day 4's breaks

Day 4 also gets three 10-minute breaks, with the same “no fixed content boundary” caveat as above - but its structure differs slightly, since Combining All the Sessions and Wrap-up keep their original times (16:10-16:55 and 16:55-17:00). To make room for the breaks without pushing those later, Session 4’s content is trimmed by 30 minutes (from 130 to 100 min) and split into three segments (10/45/45 min) rather than four, with the third break landing right before Combining All the Sessions begins.

Green: “Name one thing you feel you learnt so far.” Red: “Name one thing you feel you’ve missed or have not fully understood so far.” Learners answer both in 5 min; the instructor then quickly reads through the common green answers, and spends the remaining time addressing the red doubts. Shared form / sticky notes (green + red) - Surface what actually landed from Session 1, and clear up lingering confusion before building on it in Session 2.
14:00 - 14:15 Session 2 (part 1 of 4) Delivery of Session 2 content, first segment - continues directly from the Warm-up, together forming the first ~45-min block before the first break. session_2.md See Session 2 Learning Outcomes Turn Session 1’s theory into a repeatable design process, applied end-to-end to one mini-training.

Day 3 - [DD Month YYYY]

Time Activity Description Materials LOs Teaching goal
13:30 - 14:00 Warm-up (reviewing Session 2) Distribute a form with two questions. Green: “Name one thing from Session 2 that you feel you can put into practice.” Red: “Name one thing from Session 2 that you feel you will need more information about before putting into practice.” Same format as Day 2: 5 min to answer, then instructor review focused mainly on the red doubts. Shared form / sticky notes (green + red) - Check how well Session 2’s design process is sticking before moving to delivery and engagement in Session 3.
14:00 - 14:15 Session 3 (part 1 of 4) Delivery of Session 3 content, first segment - continues directly from the Warm-up, together forming the first ~45-min block before the first break. session_3.md See Session 3 Learning Outcomes Shift trainers from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side,” and give them concrete levers for learner motivation.

Day 4 - [DD Month YYYY]

Time Activity Description Materials LOs Teaching goal
13:30 - 14:00 Warm-up (reviewing Session 3) At the end of Session 3, distribute a two-page summary of the 8 evidence-based learning principles. Learners read it and write down questions or doubts about the principles - either right at the end of Session 3, or at the start of Session 4 (their choice). This warm-up reviews and discusses those questions. Two-page summary of the 8 learning principles - Consolidate the 8 principles from Session 1 before applying them concretely to assessment and feedback in Session 4.
14:00 - 14:10 Session 4 (part 1 of 3) Delivery of Session 4 content, first segment - continues directly from the Warm-up, together forming the first block before the first break. session_4.md See Session 4 Learning Outcomes Establish that assessment, feedback, and evaluation must be planned from the start of course design, not added as an afterthought.
14:10 - 14:20 Coffee break 10-minute break. - - -
14:20 - 15:05 Session 4 (part 2 of 3) Delivery of Session 4 content, second segment (45 min). session_4.md See Session 4 Learning Outcomes Establish that assessment, feedback, and evaluation must be planned from the start of course design, not added as an afterthought.

15:15 - 16:00 Session 4 (part 3 of 3) Delivery of Session 4 content, third segment (45 min). session_4.md See Session 4 Learning Outcomes Establish that assessment, feedback, and evaluation must be planned from the start of course design, not added as an afterthought.
16:00 - 16:10 Coffee break 10-minute break, right before Combining All the Sessions. - - -
16:10 - 16:55 Combining All the Sessions Standalone closing activity (not part of Session 4 itself): recap Nicholls’ curriculum design cycle, the 8 principles, and the 6 learning strategies from across the whole course; then Challenge 4.6, applying one principle and a matching strategy in small groups. Bonus section in session_4.md - Bring the whole course together, and have learners actively re-apply what they’ve learned rather than just hear it recapped.
16:55 - 17:00 Wrap-up & Feedback Close the course; collect final feedback from participants. - - End on participants’ own voice - what the course achieved for them, and what to improve for the next run.
